Through this initiative, ten of the original 11 afterschool programs are each establishing two healthy behaviors learning center sites that will serve as models and coaches for other afterschool programs, beginning in the fall of 2008. Click here for a listing and description of these programs. These programs and their directors are receiving state and regional recognition. A World Fit for Kids! received a 2007 Spotlight Gold Medal Award (and $10,000) from the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Debra Mason, coordinator for the Mt. Diablo CARES program, received the Network for a Healthy California’s Champion for Change for Community Engagement Award in January 2008. She and her program were also featured on the front page of the Contra Cost Times. Mary Hoshiko, Vice President of the YMCA of Santa Clara Valley, received the Second Annual Santa Clara County Office of Education “Wally” Award for exemplary contribution to the community in promoting activity and healthy eating. The first award went to the author of Fast Food Nation.
Representatives of the 10 learning community programs (and CCS) also serve on a variety of state and regional advisory committees that affect afterschool policy, especially in the areas of nutrition and physical activity. The healthy behavior learning center sites will be announced as they are certified.
